Could anything have been done to save the Crusader states?

They would have had to integrate themselves with the native population. Actually tried to learn their culture and practices, so that they'd be willing to actually support the crusader states instead of immediately welcoming the liberating Muslim armies every time they came around. Maybe elevating more of the native Christians into the nobility, too.

Easier to genocide the locals and ship French pilgrims in to replace them.

They should've done what the Muslims did and force the infidel to convert via threats of death. The Christian population at this time was significant enough that they'd be able to hold on to the land even with the increased militancy among the (former) Muslims.

Only way for them to have survived would have been to create a self-sufficient, and very powerful realm. They would have had to control the modern day countries of Isreal/Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordon. As well as this ->1867382 to have created the stability, and strength they needed.
Even then it's a toss up. They had enemies on all sides, and they held one of the holy cities of Islam. No way the neighboring realms would have ignored that forever, even if they kept losing.

They almost were. Christianity was huge among the Mongols until the Khan converted to Islam. It was the primary influencing religion under Mongke and Hulagu Khan converted to Christianity.

If Crusaders actually were second sons that did it for the money like some Historians believed (or because they wanted to send the excess of manpower somewhere), the Crusader States would have a better chance.

What really harmed the Crusades was that Crusaders would go there, fight, conquer something... and then leave.

If the French weren't too greedy and didn't send their colonists everywhere(Latin Empire, Sicilia, and so on) except Jerusalem, they would have succefully colonized this land, and if the Germans weren't retards(especially their emperor) they would have conquered a huge chunk if not the entirety of the Middle East under Frederick I.
