Britain wanted to join in because france and germany trading freely could fuck over britain so they wanted in on the trade too. From that they just started to add members slowly, and got especially eager after the soviet union fell.

They are printing more than that. France and Italy get 500 billion/year each to finance their pension system thanks to some semi-secret EU treaties that were discovered by the public only recently. If it was possible for the ECB to hide the creation of 1 billion euros/year of fiat money from the public for God knows how long, then you can imagine how corrupt the entire system really is.
