I wouldn't say that people overstate his valor undeservingly. The man did delude the Germans into believing that they were being fought on 10:1 odds only by pure merit of maneuvering his units wherever the Germans did not expect them.

And I hear that the "heh, let's pretend we attack Romania but instead we do Poland" was top notch.

Meanwhile, the Rommel fanatiscism has reached such heights that I've heard children on /pol/ say "Hitler would've won if Rommel was in charge of Barborossa", and now THAT's silly.

Honestly, I would say that Rommel is more overrated than Patton, although it is something of a close race.

Patton fanboys are almost overwhelmingly American, and it really started with that movie. Rommel's fanboys are much more widespread and the phenomenon has been going on longer.

Who the hell overrates Montgomery? Most people get on his case for all sorts of things, and ignore his actually good maneuvering in places like North Africa and Sicily, and overlook that he did a lot of the planning behind Overlord and Cobra.

tbqh the part about Japan operating their subs like Germany is the only correct thing in that whole post. IJN sub doctrine was stupefyingly retarded, even for then. The Japanese had large numbers of large long distance submarines, perfect for striking at the stretched American supply lines across the Pacific...but Japan decided their subs were a scouting force first and an anti-warship force second. They didn't even consider using them to strike convoys.

You know what the grand total of the IJN's sub fleet's accomplishments were in the war against America? They sank the Yorktown after it had been knocked out of the fight at Midway, they sank the Indianapolis after it had delivered the atomic bomb, and they occasionally put the Saratoga or a battleship into the shipyard for a few months with a single torpedo hit.
