Was Saladin really such a cool guy?
Knights of the time thought he was a pretty cool guy for a Saracen.
>nothing
>everything
literally what did he mean by this

Strategically, tactically, commercially, the city didn't mean anything, but spirtually it meant everything

On one level, it's just a city. The faith in God is more important. On the other hand, it means everything to the people of that faith (and God demands it be taken), so it means everything.

Everyone always points out how lucky the first crusaders were, and that while they were good soldiers and commander their victory over the muslims was mainly due to luck.
But can we take a moment and look at the third crusade and how freaking lucky Saladin got?
>Saladin captures Jerusalem
>Christians reel, Pope immediately calls a crusade
>William the Good jumps at the chance, convinces the Germans (HRE), the French and the English to join the crusade
>The greatest naval commander in a millennia, Margaritus of Brindisi manages to control the entire Eastern Med with 60 ships and even managing to control Saladins movements
>William the Good controls one of the most if not the richest kingdom in Western Europe at the time, with a large pool of manpower (he invaded ERE with 80 000 soldiers)
>Barbarossa is raising a host of 100 000 soldiers
>naval route to Jerusalem is entirely open thangs to Margaritus
but then
>william dies lol
>margaritus gets recalled because of this
>barbarossa dies lol
>germans attack Sicily lol
If everything had went as planned, Saladin could have easily faced an army of ~150 000 soldiers that had all the logistics in check by controlling the seas and having the ample supply of Sicily
He was slightly less savage than his contemporaries and it made quite an impression. But don't look to him as a role model.

Yes, quite so! Of course those who wrote and praised him at the time when he was alive were just being duped! Us 'modern' peoples can pass judgements based on nothing and it's far more valid!

Morality is always about raising the bar higher and higher. We have our own standards and we should use them.
