/his/ tell me of the history of commercial flight and why it all ended up going to shit

Whats there to tell?
>>

it was expensive and highly regulated. It became less regulated and less expensive so the quality went way down

49 year old here, who flew to Poland for a vacation with my ex-pat parent’s in 1977 and back then, all the men wore suits and ties for the flight (I had a three-piece polyester in canary yellow with bell bottoms and Beatle boots…) and the women were of course dressed up fancy.

Even our neighbors who drove us to the airport (Detroit Metro) dressed up, as going to the airport was gee-wiz kinda thing back then.

/thread.

Airlines get away with cutting corners to cram as many people onto a plane as possible, then charge out the ass to be given enough space to breathe by 'upgrading' to business class, thus maximising profits both ends.
>>
>>1861257
That's pretty weird to think about now, and a suit on today's planes must be hell.

>Thanks for sharing, anon!
>>
>>1862122
i fly Lufthansa every summer to Europe. it's a good 9 hour flight. business class is definitely a rip and I think people tend to over exaggerate how bad economy really is. I don't think I'd ever pay extra for business class unless I was worth A LOT of money.
>>
>>1862122
I think studies actually show most people perfer cheap ticket prices to creature comforts when it comes to plane rides

People were expected to act as if they were attending a gourmet restaurant, in terms of attire and decorum, and of course stewardess sex appeal and the whole "coffee, tea, or me?" thing.

Today it's just run by bean counters squeezing every drop of profitability out of it by packing people in like sardines, but I imagine the operating costs are much higher now.

No way. They actually look very much like late-teenager and young adults.

We just think they look juvenile because of the hairstyles (the 70s was all about minimalist hairstyles on women, the kinds we give children now) and the clothes. Average young women now dress in as little clothing as possible, whereas women in the 70s actually wore more concealing fashions, like long skirts and dresses, pants, and blouses/shirts with sleeves and neck-height collars. These kinds of simple, concealing outfits are the kinds of things we still dress our children in now, but our more "mature" fashions seem to promote showing as much skin as possible, making for a very clear visual distinction between "child" and "adult".

So now when we look back at fashions for young/teen women in the 70s, it almost looks like they're all sporting children's clothes and haircuts.

48 years old. I remember walking up to the airport 15 minutes before my flight. Paid cash for a one way ticket to Los Angeles. I didn't even use my name. It was fun. I had people call me Howard Hughes, Clark Kent, Joe Montana, Larry Bird, Jimmy Conners, Ronnie James Dio, etc.

So I would have my ticket in my hot lil hand with those various names on them. It was too funny. My friends and I used to think how outrageous we could get with names.

I miss those days. When flying was fun.

Thank Jimmy Carter
Helped to get the whole de-regulation thing going
It was a privilege to fly, people behaved better then
People had patience, everything wasn't about "me"
Trash and minorities took the bus or drove
Then came de-regulation the bus folks moved over to the planes and the planes became flying buses
People who just walked or hitchhiked now take the bus
Planes are filthy and dirty, "cabin crews" are old and fat with bad attitudes, people dress like they just got out of bed to use the toilet

Disneyland used to be nice, clean, decent, Grandma could pay a few bucks to get in watch the family ride the rides, plenty of sit down places to eat, people dressed decently, no swearing, no nearly sex while in line, nice family place
Now, full of trash, blacks, gangbangers, people dressed like they just gotnout of bed to use the toilet, tattoos, everything pierced, women look like whores, everybody is fat, bad attitudes, pushing shoving, yelling into phones, hitting their tired kids, everybody wearing flip-flops, no class, no decency, just degenerates

Ever been on a bus nowadays, homeless, druggies, mentally ill, illegals, crazies, freaks, all fucked up

Everything people used to be ashamed of, they put online and parade down the street

The whole damm place has gone mad and it will only get worse and worse

Absolutely, Fucking, Disgusting

Shit was monopolistic and expensive so they threw in lobster dinners and sexy stewardesses to make people happy. Now it's cheaper and poor people can afford it but the quality of service declined to reflect the lower price. Increased mobility is always better for society but people will still bitch about flying as if it's an ordeal and pretend that airplanes are torture chambers.

There are more commercial flight regulation now than there ever was. Cheapening of the flight came due to competition in the field, advances in manufacturing, mass usage of air flight, advances in fuel economy, etc. If you want to travel in style, there are still those available. Pics related, first class. Air planes are divided down to first class/business class/economy class.

>>
>>1862952
It is true though in the context of minimum standards.

You're also correct that competition helped, but at least in the context of the United States there were legal restrictions on competition, price controls on tickets as well as restrictions on routes etc.

Legislation on safety, security and other areas is certainly higher than it has been in the past, but rules on competition are significantly less burdensome.

Obviously advances in technology have reduced costs too, but that was, at least until the recent price drop, largely offset by the almost monotonic year over year rise in fuel prices.

The conclusion that now you can basically pay for whatever level of service you want is correct now - the minimum ticket price is a fraction of what it was, which for most people is more important than the service quality.

Last I went to town, most of the girls weren't baring their breasts, arse or vagina. They had them covered.
This isn't even getting into the fact that things like breasts don't need to be seen as inherently sexual. Nudity can exist in numerous non-sexual contexts for example.

I go to saunas once every few months or so. Mixed nudity is the norm. It's not really erotic when everyone from 16-80 is letting it all hang out, but I'd also be lying if I said I never copped a glance at a particularly nice set of tits, vag or (female) butt cheeks, or never had a semi, or never sometimes later fapped to the thought of a nice pair of tits/lips. Everyone sneaks a peek sometimes.

>>1862595
So, do you like movies about Gladiators?
>>
>>1860755
The biggest reasons for it going 'shit 'are:

1) Deregulation and privatisation - allowing more airlines into the market with different routes, private airport operators jacking up prices of fees and services.

2) The advent of low cost carriers - lower fares meant cutting costs elsewhere and a race to the bottom ensuing.

3) Wider availability and affordability of air travel to the masses - direct effect of 1 and 2, and the greatest reason for having people dressing like slobs and acting like scum on planes. They also are the ones most likely to bitch about the decline of service and demand more for less, but would not have been able to afford air travel decades earlier.

4) High operating costs - aviation is a 'skin of the teeth' industry where often it's impossible to turn a profit, and as a result everything is calculated so that they can reap the greatest profit (eg you could have faster flights at a greater fuel burn or cheaper flights for a length pax will put up with, more paying passengers or greater legroom, etc). If I remember correctly, at a typical airport in Australia an A380 will cost millions of dollars in fees alone to just takeoff, add to that other costs like oil prices and it becomes a very expensive endeavour.

5) Government interference - still an issue in some countries more than others, examples include governments blocking certain airlines from lucrative routes, onerous rules and regulations which have little benefit, bowing to a vocal minority of the populace (eg residents living near an airport that has been in operation for decades), and an outright hostile relationship between the regulator and the industry.

While the changes might be most apparent to people in terms of service levels, the employees in the industry have also been negatively affected by all of the above things so that their experience is only shadow of what it was decades ago.

I can answer more questions or give more examples if anyone wants.

Some 9/11 security measures were good, like the reinforced doors to cockpits. Although there needs to be a revision to it due to the number of pilot suicides where one has locked the other out and then deliberately crashed.
>>
>>1868900
It has something to do with 9/11 you moron, because it vastly increased security and TSA presence.

I don't know about you, but standing in line for hours only to be groped by a 350 pound woman for "my safety", does not make air traveling comfortable, and neither does it make anyone safe. It's literally just illusory.

99% of what they catch is contraband or drugs anyway, because as you say, the odds of being the victim of a terrorist attack are ridiculously small, and yet people like you think this shit is necessary.

The TSA itself and a lot of the bitching that goes on about them (eg multiple hour long lines, being fondled by black women, etc) is mostly American.

I'm not American either and have traveled a lot, and I can say the most painful part in most places is actually border control (they never ever seem to have more than a handful of staff on).
>>
>>1868906
>due to the number of pilot suicides where one has locked the other out and then deliberately crashed.
Commercial pilot suicides resulting in the deaths of passengers (or civilians on the ground) are few and far between. Obviously, there have been a few high-profile cases in the last few years. The Germanwings pilot being the most sensational. We do not know why the Malaysia airlines plane went missing or if it had anything to do with the pilot (all known evidence suggests the pilot and co-pilot were both happy and balanced family men, with no debts or quarrels or known history of mental illness).

It's pretty unlikely, thankfully. A policy of basically never leaving the cockpit alone with one person seems to be the best solution.

>agent at the booth over shrugs and gives an aggressive/annoyed wave of the hand like "SO GO TO THE NEXT LINE, SHEESH!"
>which means everyone has to join the end of another massive line
>another 30 minutes later, finally get through
>run to my gate, which as luck has it is one of the furthest away (international flight)
>plane had left 10 minutes ago

And that's how I missed my flight. At the gate they claimed they paged my name several times, like it makes a difference. I explained what happened and I think I was obviously upset/flustered but they were annoyed and basically had a "too fucking bad" attitude. The Lufthansa douchenozzles said missing the flight was legally "my fault" and therefore there was nothing they could do.

In the end, I was forced to take a flight the next day, paying the difference in fees plus a change fee, which totalled about $400. had to spend a night in a hostel, too. Honestly, I've tried to avoid Lufthansa ever since. Cunts.

Silk Air 185 (1997)
Egypt Air 990 (1999)
LAM Mozambique 470 (2013)
Germanwings 9525 (2015)

Every single one of them occurred with one pilot in the cockpit who locked out the other one and then crashed them. In fact the LAM one's voice recorder picked up the crew trying to break their way back in to the cockpit.

So tired of this meme.

THE ONLY THING ABOUT FLYING THAT HAS ACTUALLY GOTTEN WORSE IS THE SECURITY SCREENING PROCESS.

>But it's so expensive!

Airline travel has literally never been cheaper. Flights are HALF as expensive as they were 30 years ago.

>But muh dangerous terrorists!

Air travel is also literally ten times as safe as it was 30 years ago. That's not an exaggeration.

>But muh lost luxury and elegance!

You can still have that if you pay what people used to pay for the same thing. We call that "first class" now, and you don't use it because despite all your bitching, you'd rather pay a fraction of the price and be less comfortable for a few hours. What has changed is you've GAINED the option of frugal travel, which you have chosen to use because you're not one of the wealthy elite who were the only ones who could afford to fly in the "good old days."

So just buy your economy class seats, pop a pill and/or use your marvelous universal entertainment device, and shut the fuck up.

Rich upper class had to start sharing flights with dirty pesent

Airplanes are still highly regulated

Business makes a big difference for long flights. Fortunately work pays for it and I fly on a very frequent basis. Going back to economy sucks.

It is very nice. The shower is a nice perk but you can just shower in the First Class lounge in Dubai anyway.
>>
>>1869588
seems like a meme. I can't imagine any circumstances under which I'd want to shower either at the airport lounge OR during the flight itself. I can't imagine why even how power businessmen wouldn't be able to shower at whatever hotel they're at before their flight.

Similar to the pajamas they hand out in super luxurious first class packages. I mean really do people actually bother putting them on?

I do use the PJs if I want to sleep. The shower is good once you wake up. You can shower, change from the PJs into a suit/whatever on the plane with Emirates and then head into the office fresh.

Prices used to be fixed by the government. There was no competition in pricing so the airlines had to get customers by affording the highest quality service to their passengers, or at least higher than their competitors. When price controls were rolled back it was a race to the bottom.
>>

Which made flights much cheaper, which is what people actually want more than high quality service.

I remember going to the cockpit and getting the pilot wings.

Having a shower between longhaul flights is a godsend. I typically do an 8hr leg and then a 14hr leg travelling between Australia and Europe, stopping in Singapore. If there's enough time I will always try to have a shower in the lounge in Singapore - it wakes you up and makes you feel less shit for the next segment.

Last year I did Australia -> Singapore -> Frankfurt -> NY and had showers in both layovers; can't imagine how much worse I'd have felt doing that without them.

>>1869154
Yes, and there are several more. Tragic and selfish of course. But still, out of hundreds of thousands of flights in the same time period, the odds are extremely low, lower than hijackings.

Seems like they're more common than hijackings post 9/11 thanks to the security doors and changed pilot procedures
