Its the only real literature i read on i so far so Im not very qualified to say, but I think its a really great book for that.
Here are some other books another anon recommended for after you read 1941,
Empire Of the Summer Moon
In english, If you are just starting out I recommend some of Thames and Hudsons books, like their latest editions, The Maya, The Aztec, The Incas, Mexico from Olmec to Aztecs, Chronicle of the Maya Kings and Queens: Deciphering The Dynasties of the Ancient Maya, An Illustrated Dictionary of the Gods and Symbols of Ancient Mexico and the Maya. Maya Cosmos is also really good, The Aztecs by Michael E Smith. And of course I recommend the Popol Vuh, if you want to go to the primary sources.1491 as well I enjoyed.

I've read Empire of the Summer Moon, which was indeed good.
I also have a primary source of one of Cortez' crew on my nook, but haven't gotten around to reading that.
