I was going to say Mexico too.

People (outside Mexico anyway) don't even view it as a failed state, but it's corrupt to the core, and a wonder it plods along. Brazil is in a similar boat.

Congo, South Africa, Germany, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh also strike me as places with overall pretty sad pathetic histories. Most of eastern Europe and frankly all of Africa would be in the same boat.

The Brits have always had it pretty good. Even the poorest peasant or factory worker had a lot of rights unheard of anywhere else.

These two mean that peoples inhabiting Britain/Ireland are more settled than most, having a relatively pleasant climate, promoting agriculture, population growth. Less time spent worrying about invaders or harsh climates mean more time spent on social and technological progress.

Decimated doesn't begin to describe it. It was a literal genocide, and considering it was one of the few genocides to actually succeed in wiping out an entire race it should be given a lot more attention in the history books.

A lot of the treatment the aboriginals received is sad because of how ridiculous it was. Until the 1940s it was illegal for an aborigine to even come into Perth.

Probably not the happiest but certainly up there is England. They've lost a bunch of wars but never really suffered for it like some other losing nations have.

They've basically had like a thousand years of winging it and remaining mostly the same. They also haven't really had to fight for their survival and way of life in a long time, even in World War 2 it wasn't nearly as bad as some other nations who were occupied.

Why do you think the plans for the invasion of Britain was scrapped in WW2?

Not only was the Royal Navy practically impossible to break through, they couldn't achieve air superiority over the island. Also, the way the tides work around Dover is awkward for an invasion like Normandy, they worked it out that they'd have to land some troops 5 hours later if they were going to attack at multiple beaches, this would have completely ruined the element of surprise and allowed plenty of time to get everyone ready at the predicted landing zones.

Now let's say you do manage to smash through the RN home fleet, cripple the RAF and capture Dover, how are you going to feed and supply those troops? Especially when the RAF gets moved further up north to harass you in the south and the rest of the fleet gets the message to return home.

Basically, it's not fucking happening. The only chance was to starve them out until it hopefully makes the civilians revolt and the government is forced to the negotiating table.

Churchill himself wanted the Germans to attempt it because it would have had Stalingrad tier casualties and carved up the German Navy.

This is such a common misconception. Poland has actually a fairly advantageous geography. Its true problem was that the country had become very early on internally imbalanced, eventually reaching debilitating scale.
