Here in the Philippines, our high school history course is divided as follows: Philippine history (Freshman year), Asian history (Sophomore year) and "World" history (really just Europe, the Middle East, and the USA, Junior year). In general, it gave students a broad basic overview of global history, which is nice

However, Asian history sucks dick if you have ultraweeabs in your classroom and the trimester's designated Japanese day/week of lecturs rolls by. Unfortunately for my batch (2008) we had an ultraweeab AND an autist. Like laughs-to-himself-over-nothing, blurts out random shit kind of autist. And holy hell did he make those lectures uncomfortably memorable.
>Prof. lectures by using source material that translates most Japanese terms.
>Autist Weeab supplies the japanese words for most of these: UH SIR I BELIEVE TENNO IS THE JAPANESE WORD FOR EMPEROR. GN-GN-GNAAAH-I THINK THE WORD FOR SHRINE IS X IN JAPANEES? YEAH. OH! THEY CALL US FOREIGNERS GAIJIN! YES!
>Lectures move on to the Samurai, their society, and their wars.
>Autist Weeab does sword-swish sounds and shouts HWAYAAAH whenever the prof. talks of battles.
>Prof. is a great guy and tells Autist Weeab to calm down. Autist Weeab then makes those sounds to himself in audible whispers.
>Japanese religions are discussed. Autist Weeab makes those "ninja chants" complete with hand gestures. Or pretends to meditate like a buddhist monk, cross legging on his chair.
>Prof. talks of the arts during the Tokugawa period, which included Kabuki.
>Weeab abruptly stands up, raises his hands, does a scrunchy face, and shouts that Yooo! sound in Japanese theater and laughs to himself.
>Class becomes ground zero of cringe, professor included.

I remember being automatically uncomfortable during sophomore year every Japanese week rolls. Thank god for the Meiji period and WWII, as Modern Japan lectures shut him up probably due to both the lack of anime from those times and the detailing of Japanese War Crimes.

My local equivalent is a viking dweeb. Don't have any particular stories, but by god - norse pagan time romanticism is strong in that fellow.

To me it seems that he thinks that only people who lived around the pagan Baltic Sea were exclusively norsemen. He is utterly convinced that every other pagan peoples were in some sort of wooden age. According to him, every single pagan polity was founded by norse settlers who then assimilated into local culture.

According to him, the term "viking" is synonym for "norsemen".

>Have this one substitute teacher at HS
>Regular teacher is going through some kind of lung problem, and misses about half the year, so we see her a lot.
>In every single class, without fail, she will make some digression about what we're talking about into how she went on a trip to Burkina Faso and it changed her life and outlook.

And the comparisons were usually tortorous, because surprise, in a World History class, it just doesn't come up much. So for instance a brief mention about Stoicism as a Greek philosophical movement started off with how they didn't think you should get upset over things outside your control.

But that's not as good as the way Burkina Fasoans do it, because they believe you should always be happy, and if something goes wrong, you should have sex with a friend to feel better!

Yep, grew up in the 5th district. My highschool was in the 13th district not too far from the Asian neighborhood, so around 50% of the kids were minorities. I'd guess something like 25% Asian, 20% Arab, 5% African.

History teacher here, I've heard this kind of crap time and time again and have made it my god given mission to battle against it any way I can. Usually the students think my classes are hard, but my pass rate is good, and I can tell they're learning at least something

>>1863798

Yep, the history classes are considered one of the better parts of my school too.

I really dislike the school. Its a democratic school which means students vote on policy. This leads to strange things being voted on. For examples you are allowed to skip classes. This leads to not only the teachers being lazy shits, but the students being lazy shits too.

The math classes also tend to have people throwing pens at each other and talking throughout class. People just walk in and out of the classroom as they please. The maths teacher is too timid to control the class at all.

Also I don't know if this is normal but maths classes always have people of different skillsets in them. This means the maths teacher always helps the people already good at maths because the easy maths is boring to him.

It also wasn't that rare for the maths teacher to skip lessons so that he could go larping. fucking larping!

I don't know why I'm sayingthis. But god damn I hated that school.

The irony is, while that was dumb anti-americanism aimed at saying the US is imperialist. Im not at that point where I kinda agree with them, but for entirely different reasons. And the same applies for europe of course.

Yes, there are three responses to this too.

swede here. I have never meet a neo-pagan in my life. Where they at?
>>
>>1864216
Oh hai.

Well, as >>1864262 has said, it's pretty basic "Facts & Figures." Like, for example: Chinese history is basically a rundown of Dynasties, their notable emperors, notable achievements, and some wars. You can multiple dynasties in a day. But the details of which are like this:

Philippine history is bloody obvious so I won't talk about it. But "Asian History" in Sophomore year, every trimester is largely divided into macroregions.
>South Asia (Largely India. Pakistan comes in the last Trimester with the modern shit)
>East Asia (Largely China, with a week or day on Japan, and on the last two trimesters, one day on Korea. One day on the Mongols, usually coinciding with the Yuan dynasty)
>Southeast Asia.
That is the official curriculum, but our Asian Histo prof was pretty boss and managed to insert a discussion on Central Asia and the Nomad Hordes other than the Mongols like the Scythians and the Turkics.

Meanwhile, "World History" is really just the history of the Europe, Middle East, and the USA, and is divided into Trimesters.
>1st Trimester: discussion on the Greeks, the Romans in Europe. Discussion on the ancient peoples of ME, and the Persian Empire. Medieval ages & Rise of Islam follows.
>2nd Trimester: Mongol Invasions, Renaissance, & Enlightenment in Europe. Rise of the Ottomans. A day on American history from Revolution to Civil War.
>3rd Trimester: Napoleon & Industrial Revolution in Europe & America. Age of Imperialism & the decline of the Ottomans. WWI, WWII, Cold War.

viking actualy comes from the saying "going on viking" which means to leave ones home with the intention of returning with wealth. This doesn't nesseary mean going looting, as some people who went on viking went trading(most known cases are looting obviously). But saying viking is a synonym for norsemen is just plain wrong, as many nordic chiefdoms/kingdoms had huge viking issues themself.
What you are doing is basicly saying each shark is a fish so shark is a synonym for fish.

>intervened
key word, anon, your professor was probably not actually wrong, depending on how you interpret "The US never intervening"

Most every war the US fought before WW1 had something very specific and direct to the US or US national interests from the beginning.
The start of WW1 involved problems that had nothing to do with the US, and it wasn't until well after WW1 made itself the United States' problem did the United States intervene in favor of the Entente. Everything before that was either specific to US territory, US territorial claims, US domestic politics, pre-superpower US attempts to expand its own power & wealth, territory close by to the US that could badly impact pre-superpower US national security if it fell into the wrong hands, or somebody fucking with Americans.

I get the feeling you misunderstood what your professor was saying, made an ass out of yourself in class responding to something the professor didn't say, and are now posting on 4chan making it seem like you really did know more than your professor when you really didn't.

There's one story that still really gets on my nerves when I think about it:
>In junior year Social Studies Methods course for edu majors
>Assigned into groups for project where we need to create a lesson that we'll teach to the class eventually
>My group decides to do a lesson on debating support and criticism for the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan
>Working in the library one day with group and we're just doing some preliminary research on our laptops
>Find a Pew poll from a few years back that covered US & Japanese relations
>Just sort of reading some of the graphs out loud to the group as I scroll through the page
>Mention one question that asked Japanese people whether Japan had apologized enough for its actions during WW2, needed to apologize more, or if no apology was necessary
>One of the girls in my group acts surprised at the entire premise of the question saying something along the lines of "The US was WAY worse than Japan during World War 2"

Now look, I get that there's no way to objectively quantify a question like "Who was worse during such and such event", but I cannot for the life of me conceive of any reasonable measurement you could use to reach her conclusion. What really gets me though isn't what she said, it's that she's teaching history to students just like I am. Something about it all just really pissed me off at the time and still annoys me to this day.

History and art are dead ends most of the time, just don't do it.
Art studies will make you a depressed drug addict with no job and history studies will make you into a depressed, potentially alcoholic with no job.
Bite the bullet and study stone masonry or plumbing. My best mate dropped out of uni, became a stone mason apprentice and now earns 4k€ a month, while i'm still studying French and Russian to become a translator and i have to fucking starve for the last days of each month.

>"It seems like it always seems to be the case that Europe is worse off than other regions, I mean just look how inferior they were to the Great Malian Empire!
>They kept on talking about how great Mali was compared to Europe for a bit

it was a legitimate WE WUZ moment, although I don't think they were black.

Another time, a class on colonialism

>Professor's end of the year project for us is that we do a project constructing an artificial colony with a world fair representation, so that we would think like a European imperialist and understand them (It was pretty fun, hard class with a huge amount of reading but those are the good ones)
>Native American student raises their hand
>"But professor, what about if we're triggered by this?"
>Professor is non-plussed, says that we need to understand the Europeans in order to understand how imperialism worked
>Native American goes on about how for people with a long history of imperialism its being oppressed
>Professor argues with her for like 10 minutes
>Native american girl keeps on throwing around triggered, oppressed, refuses to see the point of the exercise
>Professor ultimately has to shunt her asides and say that we had to go on with the class.

The professor sent out an email later to cover her bases and say that she didn't mean to offend any one, kek.

No it was all secondary in that class. And the thing is, she was very interested in history, not like some of edu majors where history sorta just falls into their laps. I'm trying not to sound like a complete prick and I'm not just doing this to bash bleeding heart liberals (I mean my politics fall somewhere center-left), but she really was insufferable. I remember in another edu class we had senior year she briefly mentioned some self-congratulatory story of how the teacher she was doing field work with praised her for telling her students that Andrew Jackson was a dick, saying something like "You're the only one I've seen who will tell the students stuff like that." It wasn't that I'm some Andrew Jackson fanboy, it really had nothing to do with him in particular. It was that she seemed to have this sense of intellectual superiority just because she didn't blindly support whitewashed history.

I mean, yeah Jackson was a dick, but to just say that or to give your students just that impression of him (or other historical figures/events/etc.) for that matter is a terrible disservice to both them and their understanding of history. If you can't teach the many nuances of history I don't think you deserve to be a teacher.
>>
>>1870564
Yeah I agree. A lot of my history classmates were pretty biased, I don't think all of them would've taught in a biased way but I'm sure some do. It's a shame since I see one of the major points of teaching history is learning to gather evidence and argue for an opinion that has a legitimate antithesis and if you make it completely one sided it reduces the critical thought around those kinds of topics.

Exactly, I know that I'll always let my some of my biases slip into my teaching, that's just unavoidable, but the end goal of teaching a debateable lesson in history or social studies is to present as much relevant information for differing sides as you can to the students and let them form their own conclusions.

Like for instance I've done a lesson on the debate over the atomic bombings every year so far with my students. Now personally, after careful thought and consideration, I wholeheartedly support the decision to use the bombs. But when I teach the lesson I don't tell the students my stance until the very end and I try to always play devil's advocate and bring up as many good counterpoints against the decision as I can whenever students argue that they support the bombings. Who knows, I may still be doing a terrible job and only think I'm adequately fostering a neutral discussion, but I do know that I'm at least making an attempt at it unlike I feel that girl would.

It's not exactly rage but:
>Student teaching at a high school in inner city Milwaukee
>Teacher I'm working with keeps referring to King George III when trying to give examples of what a "tyrant" is, blaming him for all the things the British imposed on the colonies
>Just sort of bite my tongue and keep quiet
I get that it's minutia, not important to the grand scheme of things, and that we were teaching to a class of kids who had no interest in history or school in general since practically none of them were going to college, but even if you are going to give an incredibly simplistic take on American history like we had to for those kids it can't hurt to at least get the minor details right.
>>
>>1868244
This kind of shit makes me so miserable, because you just know the teacher had to explain this to multiple classes before she started doing it preemptively.
Speaking of retarded kids

> high school
> Going to 'Smart kid school' which means Latin/Greek/French/German/English/Dutch
> second to last year
> we have now been learning (to translate) Latin (texts) for five years at this point
> "Now, 'cum' plus indicative means something along the lines of 'when'" says the teacher, rushing through the easy part of the translation
> "What's an indicative?" says Alex

Five years of Latin.
Almost a third of his life at that point.
And still, the most basic form of verbs eluded him.
After years in which the teachers droned on about how to recognize the conjunctive, how it was discrete from the indicative, the meaning still eluded him.

Also, in the same year, he asked at one point what a "betrekkelijk voornaamwoord" was, if there's any Dutchie on here with better English, tell me the actual term because I have no clue whatsoever, but it's used when referring back to something said previously, so something like "(the person) who/(the thing) that" sort of thing, with the bits between brackets being in the previous sentence.

It was fucking painful.

"Viking" was a profession, not an ethnicity. Basically every people that lived on the shores of the Baltics had their own groups that lived the Viking lifestyle.

To other peoples, the nations of Baltics were virtually indistinguishable, so they just lumped them as Norse. In reality, it seems that for example Slavs made their way to Iceland along with Norse as freemen rather than thralls, as evidenced by archaeological finds.

Not him (I'm also a Yank) but George III had variegate porphyria which caused him to be be pretty incompetent and not command much respect. Most Brits at the time would not have liked or respected him, just the title he held.

Moreover, the House of Hanover were purely figureheads. George I didn't speak English and almost never visited. His descendants became Anglicized but the first four Georges owed Parliament their title and no problem letting Parliament run the show.

That was a thing some professor at Harvard (I think, or some higher tier university) started. Apparently he rarely made mistakes so it was an honor to get a coin from him when you corrected him.
I had a professor that followed that and he gave me a dime.

diocletian was the original autist
abdicating his role as emperor to raise cabbages and even telling the inhabitants of carnuntum after they begged him to come back (cuz civil wars) that he is too busy with dem cabbages
based as fuck imo
>>1876085
>What did he mean by this?
either some "muh imperial US is the same as commi russia spreading their ideas" or "we run by commies" shit
can't think of any major historical comparisons besides railroad building from the top of my head
>>
>>1876085
maybe idea of russian exceptionalism and american exceptionalism as similar?

Like european but also beyond european, transcending it in different ways

I have heard this before; but it's not a historical, more cultural comparison
