I just listened to the episode of Hardcore History in which James Burke basically claimed that history up until 150-200 years ago is fucking irrelevant to our understanding of humanity because vast majority of humans were illiterate and power basically just fell to the lucky dozen of talents who wielded most tools. He also said that dark ages are a stupid concept, since, again, for 99% of population the world before and after Rome stayed the same. Is this absolute madman right?
>>
>>1855592
Spooky... or perhaps glorious?

So sick of this retarded analogy. Maybe I missed the history class where they talked about Rome establishing international legal and financial institutions and achieving economic hegemony over the entire world through advanced capitalist trade policies.
>>
>>1855615
He's an idiot. The specter of the Roman Empire still haunted Europe throughout the Middle Ages in the form of the Catholic Church, which pulled millions of people out of illiteracy and began to establish the borders for the nation-states we see today.

Barely anything important was lost, most of it was copied or moved.

Also the library wasn't cataclysmically destroyed, it decayed gradually and reduced in importance over time. By the time it was burned down there were no books in it.

Also there's still a library there in the exact same spot. You can go to Alexandria and visit it, if that's your thing.

>>1857270
Sure Achamaenid Empire only lasted 'til Alexander. Greeks lost their independence to Rome in about the 2nd century BC. Roman Republic and Roman Empire should count as the same "nation". Also Rome continued on long after 180. Eastern part didn't fall until 1204/1453/1461. Ottoman golden age should be 1453-1683. Romanov Russia was followed by a USSR made stronk under Stalin, but yeah, that declined rapidily in the 70s-90s. I think the selection of great powers could've been more extensive. Also putting some kind of "historical law" of great powers being great only for 200-250 years is rubbish historicism.

the current """refugee""" crisis is the prelude of the 376 gothic war

>In the summer of 376, a massive number of Goths arrived on the Danube River, the border of the Roman Empire, requesting asylum from the Huns.[3] They came in two distinct groups: the Thervings led by Fritigern and Alavivus, and the Greuthungi led by Alatheus and Saphrax.[4] Eunapius states their number as 200,000 including civilians, but Peter Heather estimates that the Thervings may have had only 10,000 warriors and 50,000 people in total, with the Greuthungi about the same size.[5] The Cambridge Ancient History places modern estimates at around 90,000 people total.[6]

>"""refugees""" at your border
>help them over with boats and vessels
>your welfare system can't handle all of them

>some years later they sack your capital and mark the destruction of your nation

The vast majority of writing isn't really that noteworthy. The very noteworthy stuff would likely have been copied many times over and be read in many different places.
