GDR wasn't planned at that time. Stalin offered the West a united neutral Germany.
To be fair despite the fact Soviets were shit it was West that escalated shit into Cold War.

Half my family comes from the DDR, (they live in east Berlin.)
It wasn't that bad really, and the army was quite strong, better trained aswell.

But the economy..
my god, the DDR paid the full price of ww2, and entire factories were literailly shipped to the USSR.
Aswell as building free military equipment for the USSR for tens of years.

No wonder they where broke compared to the BRD.
