True communism, as in Communism as defined by Marx, isn't something that can be tried.

Communism isn't an alternative to capitalism, it was capitalism's predicted end result.

No, there hasn't been anything close to what Marx defined actually achieved yet. Hell it's impossible to say whether it ever will be achieved. But he did at least accurately predict a good deal of Capitalism's problems. And it is looking like a shift towards socialism can be a solution.
