If you had to choose between dealing with the Gestapo (or any of the Nazi security organs grouped with it, such as the Sicherheitsdienst) or the NKVD, who would you go with?
Lets say you were a member of the Polish resistance, a good example, because they had to deal with both. Hell, you could even merely be the resident of a village near where the resistance operates, and you'd be in their crosshairs.
It doesn't matter if you are a partisan or not, it doesn't even matter if you sympathize with them, because both the Gestapo and NKVD still think you have information, and they want it.
Bonus question: would you rather your village be visited by the Dirlewanger Brigade, or by a group of rapacious Soviet Partisans who raid you for conscripts and food?

They were both pretty brutal. With the Gestapo you could be sent to a work camp or Death Camp but with the NKVD you could be placed inside one of their torture buildings. It's really a question of which one would make you die sooner? Also Chekas were worse than both put together.

NKVD. Nazis were incompetent often times while Stalin is the lord of terror. He orchestrated Europe more than any other leader in history, arguably.

Obviously the soviets. Rather be raped and killed than be tortured for weeks.
