He was right about communists infiltrating the government. The thing was, though, that everybody knew they were there, just that nobody knew exactly who they were, including him. He essentially staged a massive political theater that hurt hundreds of people for basically a power grab.

Actually, that's untrue. A little over half of all people named by McCarthy were named in the Venona Decrypts. He was batting far better than the NSA/FBI who named 9 correctly after McCarthy outed them.
