I hate questions like these.

It's like those retards who are amazed that many independent, early civilizations built pyramids. Like, wow if you pile rocks up really high, guess what shape they take?
>>
>>1839156
Not an argument.
>>
Because all of the permanent building materials the Romans had access to lacked tensile strength.

Arches require no tensile strength.

If you build great wooden structures, you don't need to bother with arches, but that shit isn't surviving 2000 years.

provide bigger opening space between columns, and stronger structure, also ornamental

How long were aqueducts used for?

Were many Roman innovations used long after they were gone?
>>
>>1839338

Yes, the roaches defaced the original and put their own ornaments ontop, what of it?
>>
>>1839346
Nobody after the Romans knew how to maintain aqueducts, and the urban populations that needed them were long gone.
>>
>>1839346
The aqueducts were only necessary during the height of Rome's power when major cities were teeming with people and bursting over their limits. Rome and other major cities though became severely depopulated toward the end of the empire's reign in the west and much of the infrastructure of those cities was left to decay.

The only feat of Roman engineering that really endured for a long time after the empire crumbled was their roads.

a number of public fountains in Cologne were built by the Romans, although I do not know if they were truly kept operational all that time or simply reactivated

There's three aqueducs built on top of each others passing through my city. However only the two most recents (one from 1613 ordered by Marie de Médicis and the second built by Eugène Belgrand between 1866 and 1874) are still in service. Only ruins remain from the aqueduc of Lutèce.
