They lost Louisiana territory (American Midwest) in the War of the Pyrenees
Then Napoleon invaded which made them appear as weak cucks and lead to South Americans colonies to revolt
After that, Spain was a shadow of its former self and the US stole their remaining colonies (Cuba and Phillippines)

Political infrastructure remained aristocratic and extractive in the Spanish empire, while it became increasingly liberal and capitalistic in the Anglozone. Spanish America also transitioned less well from colonial rule, Mexico was ofc "re-conquered" by the French and Brazil went straight from monarchical despotism to presidential despotism. Meanwhile the US quickly recovered for it's liberation war and Canada literally had to be told that it couldn't be a colony anymore.
