Have economists developed any "scale" to determine how capitalist vs socialist a country is? By that I mean, is there any way to measure exactly how much of the economy is controlled by the government? I would imagine that in the Soviet Union, government control would be something like 90% whereas in the US it would be something like 30%. But it would be nice if there was a better way to measure this. Has any such system ever been developed?

This is a good question.
Good questions come here to die rather than achieve fruition.
I think the closest thing to this is government spending as a percentage of GDP, but that's not perfect.

Okay. That was good, but I checked the page for sources and apparently all the data for that page comes from the Heritage Foundation which is a Republican think tank. I'm not sure if their measurements are entirely objective, but the fact sheet seems good enough. Thanks.

Socialism is worker control of the economy though, not state control.
