He really wasn't the master statesman he is portrayed usually as. Mostly he was in the right place at the right time. All he really did was find pretexts for war with Austria and France, but then the Prussian military did the work, and that was because of von Moltke and von Roon. I guess you could say he kept other powers from intervening, but that was mostly a function of the military winning so fast that other powers didn't really have time to react. They probably would have had the wars gone on longer. The fact that Prussia's strength was underrated and those of her opponents were overrated also worked a lot in their favour in terms of dissuading foreign intervention.

After 1871, his diplomacy was not that successful either. His "alliance system" was weak, contradictory, and broke down several times.

His domestic policy (Kulturkampf, Anti-Socialist Laws) was shit and did nothing but alienate huge segments of the German population from the government, making things extremely difficult for his successors.

Wilhelm II was right to dismiss him, in the actual issues they were in dispute (Anti-Socialist Laws, Reinsurance Treaty), Wilhelm was right and Otto was wrong.

I used to idolize him, but nowadays I realize how much he fucked up post-1871. In fact, the Franco-Prussian War shouldn't have happened because it earned France's eternal enmity with that humiliating treaty that ceded Alsace-Lorraine (something Bismarck warned against) and that 5 billion franc indemnity.

To be fair, from the POV of 19th century Germans, France was the historical aggressor to them. But Bismarck just had to engineer a war so that he could finally rally the German states under one flag. Prussia didn't join Germany; Germany joined Prussia.

He also regretted giving the monarch too much power when tangling with Wilhelm II and not promoting power diffusion in the Reichstag. Bismarck himself even predicted that Germany would suffer a downfall 20 years after his death.
