I'm looking at the /his/ reading guide right now and Citizens: A Chronicle of the French Revolution seems to be what I'm looking for, minus the Napoleonic wars. I might start with that.

I've read I, Claudius and SPQR on the topic of Ancient Rome. Can someone recommend more? Also, I'd appreciate if someone could recommned literature about Countess Bathory and Vlad The Impaler. Thanks in advance.

I like the Ghosts of Cannae. Book is about when Hannibal was fucking around with the roman republic. Covers the composition of the armies, some battles, and the effects the punic wars had on both Rome and Carthage.
