Did christianity changed the west more than the west changed christianity?

It unified Europe, at least religiously.
At least until the random splits.

>It unified Europe
But the Roman Empire fell around 200 years after Constantine. And then you have the East-West schism about 500 years later.
>>1824358
>random splits
Oh there was nothing random about the cause of all the splits in European history.

If you think about it, Christianity introduced far more religious disunity that unity.
For pagans religious unity was a non-issue, but with the introduction of something as dogmatic Christianity they started killing eachother over minor theological differences.

ah yes those happy peaceful pagans who just wanted to frolic in the fields and pick flowers all day until those darn Christians showed up and forced them to start killing each other. those were the good old days when celt and german lived in harmony back before those evil priests started oppressing everyone!

And Christian unity made Germans and Slavs live in harmony? All it did was add another reason to go to war.

>he thinks religious wars are actually about theology
wew led

Christianity created the west
The west clothed Christianity
>>1824630
>anything good associated with Christianity was caused by Christianity
>anything bad associated with Christianity was actually just symptomatic of another underlying element and didn't actually have anything to do with the religion
>>1824335
No. If you look at the roots of most of our traditions you'll realize how deeply they're still rooted in pagan traditions and thought.
>>1824335
Both. Western thought, especially Hellenistic philosophy, practically reshaped Christianity just when it started to become a hierarchical, structured religion. And then Christianity proceeded to influence the West for the entire Middle Ages.

Nobody claims the pagans were peaceful, just that religion wasn't the driving force of their disagreements.
Though to be frank, I don't think it was after Christianity either. Geo-politics is driven by material factors, not ideological ones; Christian or Pagan, they'd have fought for similar reasons anyway.

The things that Christ taught are what Christianity is responsible for and you will find that pointless bloodshed is not among those things.
