Why did authoritarian forms of governance become the norm in the postcolonial Middle East?
because
>PAN
>ARABISM
>have bizarre and arbitrary lines drawn across a map regardless of cultural, political, economic or spatial significance
>be surprised when your """"country"""" either collapses or is dominated by a strongman who needs to be propped up by a larger power
Basically the West did it. And for the one area the West DIDN'T utterly fuck up, Iran, the West NOW wants to fuck it up because Iran doesn't like playing ball with known nationwreckers.
Because the Middle Easterner requires authoritarian leadership.
>tribal chieftains
>Mesopotamian kings
>shahs
>caliphs
>sultans
Democracy and Republicanism are Western.
How long until the truth of >>1820861 is taken for granted and everyone can move on to actually discussing whether that situation is a good or a bad thing for the first world economically (leaving aside ethics)?

Because Britain. Also because middle easterners and blacks can't seem to figure out NOT to spite your minorities
a lack of proper civil society and complete lack of democratic tradition
Just look at Egypt where they had a democratic revolution that put into power someone that huge swathes of the country didn't particularly like. Instead of attempting to engage those who hadn't supported him (or those who had supported him with major reservations) he isolated himself from the will of the people by attempting to increase his own power, limited freedom of speech, and locked anyone not affiliated with the islamic brotherhood out of government contracts and civil service.
Meanwhile instead of waiting until his term was up and kicking him out the Egyptian military ousted him with wide popular support and replaced him with what is essentially a restoration of the old order.
I feel this political cartoon from August of 2013 describes it well.

The postcolonial Middle East inherited all the apparatuses of modern statecraft, security, and communication, but had a small fraction of its population politically engaged, informed, and educated. And a large percentage of these were military officers.
So when idealistic military officers stage their coup, they find themselves at the head of a republic with all the modern tools one needs to be a dictator without the usual safeguards like well organized political parties, an organized citizenry with a love of their civic institutions, or a media machine they couldn't quickly take over before any opposition took serious root.
a poor economy and political instability

Oh fuck off, every conquering entity creates arbitrary lines. Like the middle east was full of nations perfectly divided among ethnic lines before wwi
