What's the fastest way to having 200 tabs open.
I was thinking about history courses from a respected and /his/ approved source.
And then some Wikipedia surfing for extra material.

Also, isn't Encyclopedia Britannica superior to Wikipedia.

I know how to research a topic, but history is not a topic, it's a field. And there are many sources to start with. I was hoping to get some tips on which sources are the best to start with.

Wikipedia, or any encyclopedia, is legitimately a good source to start from.

You read the gist, you find what interests you, and then you find proper scholarship on that subject.
>>
Go to university

Alternatively ask a history department at a university to send you book lists and essay questions and practice 'em

Whatever you fucking do, do not leave your historical/philosophical knowledge at /his/ unless you want the most intolerable meme history possible. /his/ can be good at drawing your attention to things that might not have occurred to them but research them yourself, most discussion here is shamelessly political and people have absolutely no qualms twisting evidence.

without straight up going to uni:

find an era you're interested in. then look for good resources on those eras written by well respected historians. then torrent that shit

it's what i'm doing. i started with some french revolution stuff, then went into the crusades, then into some HRE stuff, and now i'm getting into ancient greece. i just pick and choose eras/events i specifically want to learn about

Start with what interests you, try to develop an interest in neighboring topics, and all along the way try to relate this with overall history, creating a web of knowledge.

If nothing interests you, don't bother learning history then. If you don't know where to start, you can start anywhere.

Natalia got me interested in the Ukrainian revolution, the annexation, and Russia in general.

But in all seriousness, start with an audio book or books on the history of Western Civilization to ground yourself, then start branching out. The WORST way to 'learn' history is to ONLY read about things that personally interests you. That's why a basic grounding is necessary.

Once you have a basic grounding and you want to focus on something specific read the essential books in that field. Remember, journal articles exist, not just books.

If you are really into history then learn historiography; the history of history and the different ways history has been written. The book 'The Varieties of History' is essential to this, also the book 'What is History?' is great to great you thinking about history as a discipline.

Thanks for all the tips, guys.

I know that I can't realistically get an in-depth understanding of every historical era, but I do want to familiarize myself with at least the basic happenings properly. So, naturally, the first step is to study some 'overall' material, that cover the entire history, and then starting a more detailed study of specific periods. While I do have some favorites, I really can't bring myself to say that I find certain history "boring". It's all exciting, all of it has plenty to offer and teach.

I got myself a few "overall" books, and will start with them. I will then probably move on to books and audio lecture courses about specific periods or events I find the most interesting. This should form a solid base of knowledge. I will also keep frequenting /his/ and reading various sources on more specific topics.

The problem with studying through Wikipedia is the fact that every article links to twenty other articles, and it's easy to get overwhelmed if you're just beginning. With books and study courses, you at least have a certain pre-set limit of what you can learn before moving on. With Wikipedia, the entirety of history is presented to you with no limits like that. I don't think it's a good starting point.

It is good to be well read, but remember you don't have to believe everything you read and no era in history is fully understood. If you are unsure of something you may have stumbled across a new topic or something others haven't considered before, then it can be fun trying to figure out what really happened.

That's absolute bullshit, though. It's just a cute adage that doesn't reflect actual history. Get that sort of stuff out of your head if you want to seriously study history.

I don't think it's bullshit, I'm sure it happened on several occasions. And I imagine it's only one of several ways history records can become untrue. But questioning everything is part of my nature, so I think I'll manage to sort through the bullshit with enough research.

>>1823787
For you.

>>1823794
My mother is not much of an expert, and I doubt Natalya is either.

>>1823805
I'm mostly interested in the political history, but I doubt I'll avoid reading up on social, religious, economic or military history sooner or later. It seems so interconnected.
>>
>>1823827
Economic history is quite interesting, surprisingly. I'm reading a book that has the main focus of economic history, but also discusses political, religious and military history.

It's important to touch on a bit of everything, as often understanding certain events requires different context.

>>1823483
Wikipedia also tends to lack "personality". What I mean by that, is it's always a rough synopsis on events that dryly covers large scale events in a few paragraphs. It can be important to read a book that better manages to cover the "characters" of history, and give a bit more insight to things.
>>
>>1823827
I more like meant what era and stuff.

Let me guess. WWII and Cold War?

>>1823872
I agree with you on both accounts.

>>1823876
While both of these periods are interesting on their own merit, I would not pick them as my favorites. I'm more interested in Europe after the fall of Roman Empire. I want to learn how the church came to power, how the first kingdoms reinstated order and the what was the culture of the Dark Ages like. It seems like such a turbulent and interesting time, but I know very little about it.
From later history, I was always fascinated by Italian Renaissance and their city-state politics, and the eventual downfall of this state model, as opposed to nation states, and the reasons behind it.
If I had to pick a third, I'd probably go with Napoleonic Wars, but I'm more interested in the British side of the matter, as my schoolbooks didn't cover that much. I loved Sharpe and Hornblower TV series when growing up, but never found time to learn more about the history behind it.

Also, I'm out of Natalya pictures, so here's a generic qt.
