- How come the Cossacks were so staunchly Orthodox through the ages?

- How prosperous was Kievan Rus in it's "golden age"?

- Why didn't the Russians or the other Orthodox countries expand like say Catholic Spain and Portugal?

- Even though they lack crusades are the Orthodox a more staunch, iron fist and spine warrior of faith kind of religion?

- Does Eastern Orthodoxy have any major or minor foothold in say China? Phili? Vietnam? India? In Asia and the Americas in general?

- Memes aside (ex-KGB controlling the Orthodox and the Catholic church being slops because their pope is.. well.. him) how come Serbia became Orthodox and Croatia Catholic when they are like.. almost as close to Italy if you don't mind land and just the Adriatic?

May ask some more silly questions in the commenty sectiony thingy.

Hurrr durr why didn't poor shithole countries with limited sea access participate in colonization
>>
Ayy Russia colonized, they just went east instead of sailing to some far-away island full of cannibals. Instead they found Siberian cannibals.

>How come the Cossacks were so staunchly Orthodox through the ages?
Because it's about identity not religion. If they're not orthodox then they might as well become Poles or Turks.

That being said Christianity is a meme deal with it.

> Why didn't the Russians or the other Orthodox countries expand
Russians expanded into Siberia. It is by no means, small amount of land.
> Iron fist and spine warrior of faith
Their aren't really a faith warriors and more like the patiots of motherland.
> In Asia and the Americas in general?
They have presence in Americas, but in Asia it is mostly in the Middle East, IIRC.

>- Why didn't the Russians or the other Orthodox countries expand like say Catholic Spain and Portugal?
Russia did, that's why it's so big. Russia colonized Siberia, and later Alaska and like one fort in California.
>- Does Eastern Orthodoxy have any major or minor foothold in say China? Phili? Vietnam? India? In Asia and the Americas in general?
It has somewhat of a foothold in China and in Japan.
>how come Serbia became Orthodox and Croatia Catholic when they are like.. almost as close to Italy if you don't mind land and just the Adriatic?
Byzantium was the cornerstone of Orthodoxy, both are close to both Rome and Constantinople.
Orthodoxy was easier for preaching because it was preached in the language of the people, while Catholics preached only in Latin. The Glagolitic and later Cyrillic alphabet was created as a means to translate the Bible into common Slavic.
The pope crowned both the ruler of Croatia and of Serbia in 1075 and 77 respectively as kings to try and secure the influence of the Catholic church, however preachers from the Byzantines were more active in Serbia due to it's proximity.
So more people converted to the Greek faith in Serbia.
Serbia later get's beaten in a war by Byzantium
Fast forward to the 4th crusade, and the new Serbian ruler wants the title of a King (he also expanded), so he strikes a deal.
He get's divorced, marries the granddaughter of Enrico Dandolo, to secure money from her wealthy family, tells the Pope he will convert his people if he gives him a crown. He knows that the conversion will be pretty hard, especially since many pagan traditions remain.
So he sends his monk brother to Nicaea to strike a deal with the patriarch for the autonomy of the Serbian church.
So then when the crown and nuncio came from Rome, his brother, now the Archbishop of Serbia cucks the nuncio, and crowns him. It is at this moment that Orthodoxy became the staple religion of the Serbs.

cont.
Many Serbs believe in the conspiracy theory that everything bad that ever happened to Serbia is the covert vengeance of the Vatican for this betrayal. So they view the Vatican as /pol/ views the Jews.

As for Bosnia, and why it's Islamic.
Bosnia was in the middle, however it wasn't very rich, or important (bar one salt mine), so neither Constantinople nor Rome bothered much with it. The ruler was generally "Catholic", but a Catholic only in name. Bosnia was a hotspot for exhiled heretics from other countries, most notably the Bogomilists, who are very interesting in their beliefs (Dualism, the Devil is equal and opposite of God, materialism is a product of the Devil, so we preach in the fields instead of large Churches to be closer to God and the spiritual). So with a not so strict religious cult that appealed to the poor, it took roots. An attempted purge (crusade) by Hungary failed. So, with such lax view of religion, it was easy to entice the populace to convert to Islam for lower taxes.

>How prosperous was Kievan Rus in it's "golden age"?

Incredibly so, due to their proximity to all the Eastern trade routes.

> Why didn't the Russians or the other Orthodox countries expand like say Catholic Spain and Portugal?

They've colonized Siberia, Alaska the Caucasus and Northern Asia.

>however it wasn't very rich, or important (bar one salt mine)

Depends on the period, post 13th century Bosnia developed a rather sophisticated mining system, they've made a massive profit on their silver, iron and gold mines. The Ottomans have even adopted their mining laws, and those of the Serbs.
