I don't think the galloglass can really be called gaelic, it's a hiberno-norse development. Ireland before the Norse was amazingly backward in its weapons and armor, the club was the most common weapon and most warriors don't even seem to have worn helmets.

Compared to other kingdoms at the time in Ireland. The Norse Kingdoms weren't that big, nor did they influence the running of the Island in the grandiose capacity some people like to think they did. The Norse were expert sea travelers we were not bar a few based Monks a few centuries earlier. When push cam to shove, the Norse actually fared very badly against the Irish in battle, with many battles despite the Norse having better armour and weapons, and sometimes even larger numbers the Irish were better tacticians and decimated them in warfare. The skinny vikings aren't as based as you viking circle jerkers like to think they were.
