I'm assuming you're an atheist so consider it as a story/commentary on mankind.

God can literally come down as a human being and mankind is so flawed and cruel that they see the good he does and decides to kill him in one of the most cruel ways imaginable.

Then God comes back from the dead (he's god after all) and it turns out that in spite of all of that he forgives mankind of its sins even though he had more than enough reasons not to.

It's that kind of mercy and renouncing power that makes it a good story. It's sort of the reason why a lot of times when thanking someone I think in the back of my head that they didn't have to do whatever they did, and so I feel even more grateful.
