former generation failed to attain the knowledge and power for self-preservation so they have to create a new generation to retry it
it's basically someone playing a video game and resetting it cause they didn't get the score they wanted

the biggest failures are the ones that not only fail to achieve self-preservation but can't even have kids to continue the cycle
