Egypt is in Africa, and is pretty much the only African country talked about during most people's education.

It's a shame too, Mali was considerably more interesting than Egypt imo, and would also be more accurate.

Basically it's: black culture doesn't really have a heritage going beyond slavery, but that isn't satisfying, so some people started looking. Egypt is located in Africa, and it's the only African culture most people, especially black Americans, had been exposed to. So, a cultural association started happening among some of them.
