How could the cold war have been prevented?
Pic-unrelated
Operation Unthinkable succeeding?
Operation Barbarossa succeeding?
Japan attacking russia from the East maybe?
It started as soon as WWII was over, so it couldn't have been prevented unless one side immediately stabbed the other in the back after Germany fell.
Delving into alt-distory
China and the USSR possibly could've had a war during the Sino-Soviet split. The soviets could've nuked China before china developed their own nuclear weapons, and NATO would've jumped in as an excuse to wipe the soviets off the map. Would've been even more convenient if the soviets used part of their arsenal on China, meaning less retaliatory strikes on europe/us.
It would've shortened the cold war, not exactly prevent it though.

Honestly, it couldn't have. The only possible option that doesn't massively alter the history books (e.g. nazis winning or something) is Operation Unthinkable succeeding and thus preventing USSR from developing the nuke.
But Operation Unthinkable succeeding is honestly about as likely as a nazi germany winning alt-history scenario.

You could actually say it started in mid '44 when it was obvious to anyone with a brain that Germany will lose and the US vs the USSR will split the world in two.
>Truman fucks up during the Berlin Blockade
>US has 50-100 nuclear warheads
>USSR has zero
>world is considerably better place

They actually had a war in '69 but it was extremely brief. Mao tried to go full Korean War zergrush against the USSR and started steamrolling 900k troops into Russia, and what exactly happened after that is not exactly known but a safe bet is that the Russians used some kind experimental weaponry that made an entire batallion of Chinese evaporate within a short period of time. China retreated short after that.

It's not exactly a cold war if everybody is fighting though.
