Every mace looks like a pile of shit compared to even the worst looking warhammers.

Mace has a heavier head and is more versatile. With a mace you can hit with most sides, Warhammer only two. Ergo its probably easier to hit a glancing hit with a warhammer than a mace.
I still like both equally as much though.

It would probably take multiple strikes to bash through armor. A mace makes delivering follow-up strokes easier and faster.
