Athenian democracy happened as a mean to sustain a political class oriented towards merchant talassocracy. For that the demagogues representing the merchant oligarchy vs the landowning aristocrats needed political activism from the demos.
As a result democracy simply ceased to be a useful thing when the merchant maritime oligarchy was ruined after losing the Peloponessian War.

Not against human nature. It is a method of political organization that works on very small homogeneous communities and organizations. But mass democracy is not democracy anymore, it's just demagogy and veiled oligarchy.
