They usually only exist to further the instruments of power. E.g justifying the current power hierarchy in society, with very few exceptions.

Just look at any "public intellectual" and you will almost be guaranteed to see very complex and rhetorical ways of justifying either why the state should keep their power, or why rich people should keep their power, or why the intellectual class(media/universities)should keep their power.
