the eternal anglo
>>
>>1794291
In reality, it's America.
>>
>>1794324
So in other words, the eternal anglo.
>>
>>1794278

Because the most powerful nation on the planet speaks English

God bless America

>French replaced Latin as the most important language of diplomacy and international relations (lingua franca) in the 17th century. It retained this role until approximately the middle of the 20th century, when it was replaced by English as the United States became the dominant global power following the Second World War.[44][45
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_language#History

Basically, English replaced French as the international language because France won a war against Britain in 1783
History loves irony
>>
>>1794419
It's literally true though.

America is the most powerful country on the planet, and before that, it was Britain.
>>
Britain made Africa and Asia speak English via imperial domination then America made Europe speak English via media domination
>>
>>1794684
>and before that, it was Britain.

This one isnt true though
The British Empire was a paper tiger, both WWs proved it
That's also the reason why English was irrelevant on an international scale until the rise of the US
Outside of the British Empire and the US, no one could speak it
Hell, when the German diplomats adressed British ones in 1914 they used fucking French ("chiffon de papier") because they couldnt speak English
>>
>>1794688
Britain made Burma, India and other Asian shitholes speak English
America and its cultural domination made Europe, Russia, Japan, Korea and China speak English
>>
>>1794700
You just repeated what I posted
>>
>>1794712
No, the Asia Britain colonized and the Asia that matters (China, Korea, Japan, Russia) are two very different things
>>
Because it's easy as fuck
>>
>>1794696
Britain was a naval empire.

If the conflict was anywhere outside of the European continent, there wasn't really anyone who could compete with them.
>>
>>1794726

Fairly sure England colonised Hong Kong and had massive sway over China. Also I'm fairly sure the Japanese and Koreans can't speak English for shit
>>
>>1794291
is an eternal force for good.
>>
>>1794278
Because germans dun goofed after their wars. Germany was the powerhouse of science during the late 19th - early 20th century but they just went warmongers against slavs

Challah-wood honestly.
Mass media terraformed the global popular culture around English.
>>
1. Lexical inventory heavily influenced by both latin and germanic traditions, making vocabulary assimilation easier for most of the western world, where capitalism first flurished.

2. Not heavily inflected when compared to other european languages. This creates the 'this language is easy to learn' for new learners (again, western learners). A fairly rigid syntax also makes learning the language a bit faster.

3. Americans may be assholes about many things but they're probably the most linguistically welcoming people in the world, they're p ok with all kinds of accents and will tolerate mistakes without being dicks about it (unlike, say, the french or even the brits).

This and of course the historical/economical reasons cited above.

*the 'this language is easy' effect
>>
>>1794278
Because Americans only speak one language and when America and Britain were two of the main world powers it made more sense to use English than French.
>>
>>1794278
Because America and because they were the most important nation in the world while internet became widespread.

If internet was found in 60s, it could still possibly be French but late 90s early 2000s was the golden age of America.
>>
>>1794910
What about spelling? It get's pretty weird, and it's the only thing i found remotely difficult to learn.
>>
Because 60% of it's vocabulary is French.
>>
>>1795240
You can thank Middle English and the Great Vowel Shift for the fuckawful spelling English has.
>>
>>1794278
Country built on soil containing throne of Satan becomes most powerful in world, will host the one who unites all nations, already unites all nations within itself

that country's language is english
>>
>>1794676
>French replaced Latin as the most important language of diplomacy and international relations (lingua franca) in the 17th century.

Not really, French was already effectively a lingua franca among the nobility throughout the Middle Ages. Latin was for priests and scholars.
>>
Globalization and American influence.

But it's also a simple and easy to learn language. It all comes together.
>>
>>1794726
>americans really believe this.
>1/5th of the human population doesn't matter.
>Korean, chinese and Japanese speak english.
>>
>>1794770
>implying you can't be extremely powerful and extremely degenerate
>>
>>1794278

Historical British Empire and contemporary American hegemony
>>
>>1796099
Only the later
English wasn't the lingua franca even when the British Empire was at its height
The British Empire never managed to make English relevant outside of the shitholes it owned, America succeeded at making it relevant in the developped world almost as soon as its domination began
>>
>>1796115
Yeah, which is why every Japanese and korean and chinese dude speaks american.
And Iranians.
Gotta remember the Eyeranians.
>>
>>1796186
Japan, Korea and China use English as international language, yes
During the time of the British Empire, they didnt.
During the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japanese and Russian diplomats used French to talk to each others.

Oh, and I don't know why you believe that Iran is part of the developped world, but that's not the case
>>
>>1796211
Diplomatic language and lingua franca isn't the same thing.
>>
>>1796219
It was until very recently
Until WW2, French was the lingua franca but almost only the elites could speak it
Commers being able to speak several languages is a very recent concept.
Before WW2, globalization and US mass media (which are responsible for most commoners skill in English) werent a thing
>>
>>1796232
and what about scientific papers and mass media?
legitimate question.
Diplomatic languages are used when countries conduct talks officially. Lingua Franca would be used for business meetings and scientifc meetings and the like that don't have an national context but are rather people sharing ideas and work across national borders.
>>
>>1796239
>and what about scientific papers
Each scientist worked in his own language and most relevant works were translated in several languages

>and mass media?
They obviously didnt exist on a global scale
Each country had its own cultural media, and just like for zscientific works, brillant ones were translated

>Diplomatic languages are used when countries conduct talks officially. Lingua Franca would be used for business meetings and scientifc meetings and the like that don't have an national context but are rather people sharing ideas and work across national borders.
No, there was no lingua franca for business, science and stuff like that
It was exclusively for relationship between nations.
As I explained you above, commerce, science, art...etc had individuals work in their own language and use translators for many different languages when needed
>>
>>1794726
Look up the Opium wars. Britain had China as a puppet state.
>>
>>1796262
Britain had HK
They never ruled over China as a whole
They rolled over it in war, but so did half of Europe, the US and Japan
It never resulted in British cultural domination anywhere in China outside of HK
>>
>>1794278
Due to the result of the 7 years war.
>>
>>1794729
This might be its biggest strength against any other European language.
