I've always heard that the decline of industry is what led to the downfall of Detroit, but no other industrial city was put through the same sort of decline. What made Detroit so uniquely shitty?

These.

The Detroit PD is particularly to blame for their stupidity.

>tons of pavement apes move up from the South in the hopes that war production will be their ticket out of the south
>realize that none of the good jobs up north are for coloreds
>political temperature slowly increases
>blacks can't drink in the official bars
>police keep raiding the unofficial black bars where poor-ass black people go to get a drink
>people react with surprise when this leads to rioting

But yeah, the '67 riots and general racial tensions, drug epidemics, and inner city crime led to the middle class in Detroit leaving the city for a ring of suburbs around the city.

>Decline of industry
>Racial riots
>Ridculously corrupt Police
>Drug Epidemics
>Total mismanagement by the City government

These all contributed to a general decline in the middle class, who fled to suburbs and later other cities. This created a downward spiral where the City can't afford anything because the tax base is gone. The poor are still there though so infrastructure costs are high. The city can't pay the costs and large areas go unattended and fall apart which causes the City to go further into decline and makes the tax base even lower.

This death spiral is starting to stabilize a little though. Most of the better off poor eventually moved away so the tax burden is less crazy, and a small but growing middle class is developing. Rich CEO's are also buying up and developing much of Downtown and turning it into a corporate enclave. It's not a bad city to have a corporate HQ in these days. The City also gives huge tax breaks to these guys since they the only real influx of money and jobs.

It's a slow, painful process, but the City is starting to heal. Detroit will probably never break 1 million inhabitant again though.

The problem I have with this theory is that it seems to place the cause too late. There's been a steady decline since the '40s. This rate of decline hasn't been altered even in the worst of times (riots, 2008 crisis). Also, racial tension has been similar in cities like Baltimore, but those cities were never hit like Detroit was by decline.

Outsourcing, white flight and niggers. Niggers then left the city in ruin and kept electing corrupt politicians who did nothing but steal money from the treasury.

A conglomeration of what has been said in this thread.
Detroit benefited on American industrial reliance post-WW2, energy prosperity of post-war 50's, and lying as a key port on the great lakes when mining raw material was still a thing.

Auto workers had been long established in Detroit, so it they managed to developed organize unions that were competent in negotiating with the automakers. Automakers said fuck it, let's make shit in Mexico or poor non-Union states instead.

Blacks, white flight, and incompetent city-management has been a thing in all major US cities, who many continue on and still have it, and continue to grow. There was, however, no drive for continuing to have Detroit. All prosperous entities are destined to have a decline or downfall.
