We don't
You're a cheeky one.
We don't. In greek, "history" means roughly "someones account of that which happened". It doesn't actually mean "that which happened". So history is really just distant events described by different people. It's not really what happened. We can never know what really happened when the crusaders took Jerusalem, we can be pretty certain that it happened but we could be way off in the details because there is simply no such thing as an objective description of history. We live history as it's made and then it's gone forever. We can keep telling piece-meal stories but over the years they degrade more and more until finally they are lost and forgotten forever. Not even glory lasts forever, even the most famous of conquerors will be forgotten in the end. Time erodes everything.
