there've been many impractical attempts, Archimedes' focusing lens and anti-naval cranes are some of the earliest examples.
first practical one I can think of is War Elephants, essentially the first tanks in warfare as long as they don't get spooked by something.
as for actually madmade practical ones, I'd personally classify Ballistas and Onagers as superweapons, having artillery that could scatter enemies who've never seen such a thing was definitely a win condition in battle.
