Why none of the early Islamic-era Persian dynasties reverted back to Zoroastrianism?

It would seem sensible - most of the population was still Zoroastrian, you could score some decent PR by waging a war to reclaim the land for Ahura Mazda. Most Muslims were landowners so you could either expropriate them (thus gaining lots of resources) or made them convert (which would make them apostates from Islam, essentially forcing them to fight to the death).

It is even more weirder when you consider that at least some Muslim rebels in Christian areas did revert to Christianity after gaining some ground - for example Umar ibn Hafsun who led a rebelion in Spain.

Why don't you ask them, OP?

Because they were Muslims OP, do you not know how zealous these people are?
>>

Except several were Zoroastrian. Its not until the early 11th century that Iranians were majority nominally Muslim.
>>
Because they helped shaping islam into what would be a golden age of science and enlightenment and it became the new schtick that would last. It wasn't just some foreign entity forced upon them since it was their golden goose also, atleast back then.

The Daylamites that were never conquered by the Arabs managed to conquer alot of land from the Abbasids and established the Buydin dynasty and adopted shia islam instead of the traditional zoroastrian they had going.
Similar with the Samanid empire, that was a sunni dynasty of Sassanid noblemen would also go with islam instead of zoroastrianism.

There was no zoroastrian polity in the persian intermezzo . So the dynasty that adopted it would be alone in the region, automatically becoming what in the modern era we would call a rogue state.

There was a shitload of christian polities in Europe resisting islam, so it made more sense to convert to get allies. Specially in the example you give. Umar ibn Hafsun became a rebel and an enemy of the muslim autorities first and later became a christian in order to get closer to the enemies of his enemies.

He means the rulers. Did you read beyond the first line?
>>
Islam in Persia absorbed most of the popular aspect of zoroastrianism and other iranian religions.
>>

>t wasn't just some foreign entity forced upon them
alright, that came out wrong

I mean, it was a gradual process with some dynasties being more lenient while the umads went full ham.
Also, some of Muhammads original companions were Persians that would later govern of the sassanid lands.

The statement still carries. Modern Zoroastrianism was codified under the Sassanids and further completed into its final orthodox form by the likes of Katir. That's the form of Zoroastrianism we know today, codified and organized.

The laymen Iranians only knew the basic fundamentals of their faith and it was up to the higher castes like the nobles and priests to keep those traditions alive and the faith strong. After the fall of the Sassanids, many of the priestly caste were killed and targeted specifically against by the Rashidun and Umayyad rulers and their governors for attacks and cullings. So when Islam was assimilated by Iranians, the form of Shia Islam replaced Sunni Islam because it brought with it a wealth of traditions and customs from native Iranian faiths and Zoroastrianism chiefly.

There were attempts to keep the people Zoroastrian however with the jizya and other things, it became pointless. Also politically unstable as that would cause a rift with other Muslim states and powers. Hence why several converted to Islam after several centuries.

That last attempt was by Mardavsan (knowna s Mardvaji), a Gilak Persian whose family was one of those that were part of the Wuzargun and who was vehemently anti-Muslim, printed coins and issues specifically copying the Sassanids and was forcibly rebuilding Zoroastrian fire temples and destroying mosques before his assassination.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mardavij

>Born to a Zoroastrian family native to Gilan, Mardavij was an anti-Muslim, who sought to revive the Sasanian Empire which was conquered in 654 by the Muslims. He first started his career by joining the army of his kinsman Asfar ibn Shiruya. Mardavij, however, later betrayed him, and killed him, conquering much of Jibal. He then set out to conquer Hamadan, Dinavar and Isfahan from the Abbasid Caliphate, and thereafter declared himself king of Iran, making Isfahan his capital.

Technically OP asked for a muslim iranian ruler converting "back" to zoroastrianism, not a zoroastrian being succesful against islam.

While I'm always on for educating people on the presence and importance of Zoroastrianism the centuries after the arab conquest, this was clearly not what OP wanted. Specially since he seems to be aware of all that already.

>He then defeated the Daylamite military leader Makan ibn Kaki, and conquered Tabaristan in 932. By 934, his authority was acknowledged as far as Shiraz[1] and Ahvaz.[2] However, his goal of recreating the Persian Empire was ruined when he was murdered by his own Turkish slaves in 935.
