it was his way of ensuring his grip on power, he certainly didn't get to die a natural death because he was just such a great administrator everyone loved him. Stalin is the textbook example of a dictator who quite effectively rules through fear.

Stalin's, however, could very much be contested by other ambitious leaders, many who would use intrigue or bloodshed or betrayal. Stalin didn't kill other Bolsheviks for disagreeing with him, he killed all those who overtly disagreed, among others, just to be on the safe side.
