You ever notice how a small army beats a big army in war, sometimes? Like let's say Hannibal vs the Romans? That's because the mentality comes down to " well we are fucked might as well try this, if we fail well we were going to die anyways ". By " this " I mean like a strategy that involves trickery or something a long the lines of it.

Another explanation might be the less chance you have to win the more effort you have to put into thinking out a good strategy. Let's say you are a huge army vs just a small army, you get this mentality that you are going to win. So you probably don't put that much effort into a strategy( well you do but not as much as the small army). But let's get a small army, they have to think harder about their strategy because of their disadvantage.
