Lower Andalusia was a mistake

The Spanish empire lasted over 250 years in continental America. From the early and mid 1500s to 1810. They had the Philippines over 300 years and Cuba + Puerto Rico close to 400 years.

They may have had the most long lasting colonial empire. Not sure. And they lost it because Napoleon invaded Spain, kidnapped the King and replaced him with Joseph Napoleon, his brother.

The thing is that there hasn't been a single really successful Hispanic nation / culture that stands out on the level of the successful Asian or Anglo and Germanic countries. While those are factors, it's very hard to predict the waves of populism and violence that would shake the region in the late 90s/early 00s.

It's very hard to combine the perfect storm of Cold War tensions (which led to Soviet-backed insurgencies and American interventionism) which armed the country and left the population envisioning America as an enemy of the people. Bring some charismatic idiot to spout anti-American rhetoric and you have a buffoon in power. Alternatively, let tensions rise too much and you have a civil war in place -some of which don't even run their course due to the abrupt end of the Cold War - debilitating existing infrastructure and may make crime rise as a consequence.

It'll interesting to see how the region will sort itself out in the near future now that foreign powers are unlikely to intervene anymore. There's been widespread anti-corruption and internal development movements in many Latin American countries lately, so I'd like to believe the region will improve quite a bit in 20-30 years time.
