Are there any verses that seem to use poetic devices within this book, or is it meant to be taken at face value?
More importantly, does it's interpretation make or break the rest of Scripture?

If this guy's interpretation is correct, then the answer is: both.
Adam is humanity, but he's also represent the individual who wish to dictate morality for himself, and life(Eve) become corrupted along with that decision.
