Why does it exist?
So we can laugh at it and those that speak Flemish.

It's a British ploy to divide and weaken Europe. Notice how all those European countries like Frnce have to follow Brussels but Britiain suspiciously doesn't. It's too obvious not to see that that's a British puppet.

Franco-Dutch buffer zone.
Also Catholic butthurt.
The Spanish maintained it separate from the Dutch and French, so later on it remained that way.

Wasn't it just a brit buffer state joke that went on for too long?
Daily reminder that France's natural border is the Rhine.

A place that despises Britain for refusing to submit is obviously not a British puppet. Even at it's creation Britain, along the other major powers beside France, supported the Union since Napoleon was still fresh in their mind and because the Dutch were fellow Protestants. Once they realized France wasn't a threat they probably warmed to the idea of weakening their only real rival for seajew supremacy though.

That killed the Netherlands from being an imperial power. (though they held onto Indonesia and expanded those claims, they were tenuous at best) If the Netherlands was strong, it would compete with Britian over maritime trade, since they were quite good at it. When they socked it to Netherlands and France for example. British put a rider that all maritime slave trade had to be done through british vessels rather than dutch (who were the best shippers of goods at the time, large amount of ships, captains, clearing houses for goods, etc) so the british maritime industry could expand. It's what made Britian the naval power of the 19th century.
