It also happened in Africa

Because it involved all the major world powers.

Really though, because it was so big compared to the century or so of peace before it.
>>
>>1737285
And Asia.

>19th century
>century of peace
/his/ was a mistake

>>1737278
Because calling it the Great European War sounded lame to them for some reason.

GER thas a cool accronym
>>

Please name a general European war in between the Napoleonic Wars and WW1.

After you're done with that, please kill yourself.

As crazy as it may seem, roaches were once a world power.

Because it also took place in Asia and Africa, and it involved nations from every continent - thus making it a World War.

And South America.

Seriously though, the period in between 1815 and 1914 is generally viewed as a period of relative peace, created by the concert of Europe.

Between these two periods, you didn't have any wars where all of the major powers in Europe mobilized their militaries and fought for years at a time.

Does the Crimean war not count?

The only major power not involved in that one was Austria-Hungary.

Couple that with the Franco-Prussian war and all of Bismarcks autism and it seems a bit disingenuous to claim that 19th century europe was peaceful.

See, the wars that the period is being compared to is the Napoleonic Wars, WW1, and the Thirty Years War.

The wars in the interim didn't require mobilizing the entire populations of countries, didn't involve all of the great powers, and didn't last for years.

By those standards, the concert of Europe worked pretty well.

This isn't coming out of my ass, this is coming out of the books I've read on the subject.
