Why go through all the shit? Why defy the brutal empire?
What was his endgame?

to become the prophet of christianity
He sacrificed himself for humanity, so that we could still reach salvation even after sin, and also so that he could go to the Kingdom of Heaven
That's how the legend goes anyway, the real Jesus was probably just a really chill carpenter dude with a "love everyone" philosophy, if he did actually exist anyway.
Jesus was the coolest guy in history. And I mean the character with the conception we have nowadays, not necessarily the historic Jesus.
He loved everyone, shared his stuff, thaught good values, was great with kids, never hurt anybody, had cool hair and beard, was smart...
And most of all, he could have just fucked everyone's shit up just to get away, but he didn't want to. Top lad, really.

Wasn't inventing new religions and coming up with new interpretations of judaism very common back then? Like there were hundreds of people in the streets of Levantine cities claiming stuff all day to whoever wanted to hear them?
Seems similar to what tech startups are today. Jesus probably tried his luck once and made it through the average joes.

Why did Empedocles leap into mount Etna?

this begs the question
was jesus and his teachings a lucky coincidence, or a guaranteed prophecy, meaning if not jesus it would be someone else to fill the jesus role

Something like that, I guess.Or perhaps not. There was only one "big" branch of judaism that made so much noise back then. Jesus stuff wasn't competing with another branch, like it might have been if Islam had been on the rise at the same time.
Minecraft was a big hit in the indie industry, arguably the first indie game to make it so big, but it might happen again soon. Pokémon Go isn't really indie, but it made a bit of noise too. It hasn't been nearly enough time yet to see, since indie games started being a thing.
But over many centuries of roman levantine occupation and judaism, there was only one big religious hit, so perhaps it Jesus was particularly charismatic, or was in the right place at the right time, several times. Who knows.

Many, many other people filled the Jesus role. He's just the one that "won", there's literally nothing unique about his story (one major reason to believe much of what we think we know about Jesus is myth)

"Trying" to fulfill a prophecy defeats the whole purpose of it being a prophecy. If you "prophecy" that one day, a man with one sandal will become king of the world, and I hear about this prophecy and take to going around in only one sandal, would you be impressed? Would you say "this fulfills the prophecy, you will rule the world!"
Now consider that I did this, was proclaimed by the easily impressed, then died and never became king of jack shit. Would you STILL be impressed?
