Responding to my own question:

Perhaps the early Roman days might have been the best choice, whether or not your definition of "early" is empire or republic.

Fact is, the comprehensive dominance of Rome on the European subcontinent has probably never been matched. Smaller isolated pockets have probably been unified to a higher degree but never was there a culture more destined for greatness than the Romans, and it really just seems like they knew it.

Americans and British might be the only two cultures that really understand it right now, but nothing we do can match the adventure that Roman society completed. The time and place for something like the Roman cultural phenomenon to occur is no longer present. Maybe it will be in the future, but it does not exist today.

The best generation to be is the one that's dying off in 2016. Anxious times but in the end they got to ride that gdp curve up the 20th century and die peaceful natural deaths just in time to escape the complete collapse of Earth's ecosystem. The rest of us alive now are totally boned and will likely die in the nuclear war they were so worried about as soon as major resource shortages hit.

The collapse of Soviet Russia didn't hail some massive change in the global dynamic.

Look at Syria. We're still fighting proxy wars with the Russians, the 90's were basically a detente. Just because the structure of Russian society changed doesn't mean the Russians aren't still making this a bi-polar world.
