it was socialist, socialist was exactly what it was, not communist, not capitalist, socialist

but what made it 'comfy' wasnt the unaligned middle position betveen cold war blocks, or the foreign credits or titos diplomatic skill or even the relative economic succes of mixed economy, it was that by default, and truly, unlike many other marxist countries, and regardless of how powerful or corrupt the party elite might have been, the system worked for the people

it wasnt much, the pay was low, the apartments were small the jobs were dead end and the cars were shitty, but they were there, all of it, including quite good quality free education from grade school to colledge diploma, and universal healthcare which basicaly goes without saying

in other words everione got a job, unless they were hard core dissidents, everione who had a job got a place to live, 50 m square maybe but they got it, everione could aford that shitty little car and go on payed vacation in it, and what little savings you saved up during the year you could go spend in trieste or graz once a year, basicaly people didnt have to worry about shit, and all that was asked of them was to stay out of trouble, mind what they say in public, serve a year in the army if male and attend some party bullshit once or twice a month, and even that was optional if you werent anyone important

plus they had some degree of worker self management, which could of been great were it not for party control stifling it, but it also meant you basicaly cant loose your job unless youre a pants on head nationalist or something

also the high ranking party were wize guys, well experienced in both guerrila war and revolutionary/subversive activity, and so they knew excatly how to suppress shit and keep the people in a safe state of relative compliance without having to murder people en mass all the time like that paranoid sociopath visarionovich did for fuck knows which reasons

Tito was a good guy overall and clearly knew what he was doing, having turned once of the most underdeveloped and agrarian and backward parts of Europe into an exporter of cars within his lifetime and all.
