Is there any historical accounts of what Socrates was really like or even about his upbringing? Dialogues seem to be pointing at different directions with the Apology claiming that he started his "career" in philosophy after the experience with the Oracle and with Phaedo as a student under Anaxagoras.

False. Contemporaries wrote about him.
Aristophanes, Xenophon, Plato all wrote about him.
Aristotle also refers to him as an historical person and even tells us what was added by Plato.

when will this meme end
aristophanes and xenophon wrote about him and those three separate accounts have similar descriptions of his personality. the clouds was written before plato's works. why would an accomplished greek playwright who wrote for largely the masses write a dedicated play satirizing someone who did not exist.
this is not considering the pupils of both socrates and plato who, mind you, all wrote about him. i guess aristotle was lying as well.
so did these people, who span three different generations, make up a scheme to trick people that there was a person named socrates where these accounts featured similar characterizations of the guy?
