Money was lent at virtually 0% interest, since it was so abundant, which caused a lot of loans to be taken out, and a lot of people to borrow money to invest in things, and more and more, until eventually the debt came due and a lot didn't pay up.

Too much money, too fast, screws the economy. If the U.S. paid back China all we owed in a day, they would have massive problems.
