Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Geoffrey Pine-Coffin. Known affectionately by his men as "Wooden Box."

He and his men jumped into Normandy on the night of 5/6th June, 1944.

"Many of the Battalion got their first sight of a dead German on that bit of road and few will forget it in a hurry, particularly the one who had been hit with a tank-busting bomb whilst riding a bicycle. He was not a pretty sight. Steele-Baume and rear Battalion HQ, which still included no mortars, medium machine guns (MMGs) or wireless, joined me on the west bank of the canal at 0220hrs. Howard's men were naturally in very high spirits and much friendly banter and chaff took place as the Battalion had hurried past them. They had done a most splendid job which rendered the task of the Battalion immeasurably easier. There would now be a bridgehead on the west side of the canal for certain and, with any luck at all, it would be as deep as planned too."

Ambrose burnside
>>
>>1695965
Poor guy. There was some siege where they had tunneled under enemy lines and planted a bunch of gunpowder, and he had trained a bunch of black troops to spearhead the attack after the detonation by climbing around the crater, but it was decided that using the black troops for this operation was bad for union publicity, so they switched to another officer and untrained white division to lead the attack, who ran up into the crater and got fucked after the explosion. Then burnside gets pinned with the blame for the failure.

Creatively enough historians have called it 'Battle of the crater'
