Will getting really good at philosophy help you understand other subjects and more importantly scientific fields? Is the critical thinking that comes from it enough to make a difference?
Depends. Philosophers will zealously tell you that you literally cannot understand scientific fields without philosophy, but that is retarded. In more technical/mathematical fields it will help you in understanding why something logically follo and getting intuition about problems. But when you want to model shit, the best way to do it is by modelling shit (doing a lot of problems).

Of course but will philosophy help you solve them faster than if you didn't study it.
Nobody else?

Science, is by literal definition, a form of philosophy.
Philosophy teaches you how to think in various different ways. It also teaches you how to think for yourself.
Learning how to program does the same to an extent but that's essentially just an extension of Philosophical logic.

>You don't need philosophy to understand science
Haha sure, buddy! That's why the literal scientific method was invented by a philosopher and his book the logic of scientific discovery!

science runs into pretty regular problems that it can't solve without outside input
neurology needs to pretty heavily consult with computation theorists
physics needs input from mathematicians
mathematicians and physicists need input from bureaucratic and industrial psychologists to solve stalemates and funding crises
entire fields of science have replication crises, outright fraud, and distorted incentives
broader fields will never become outright useless because scientists are human too, and fields get perverted

>phd in philosophy
>doctor of philosophy in philosophy
you can tell philosophy is redundant nowadays just by looking at the names of academic degrees
Will studying the fundamental nature of knowledge help you gain knowledge in other subjects? Yes
