Were maces viable cavalry weapons?

They were frequently employed by cavalry of several different cultures so I would say yes. Especially one-handed small ones.

Not a military expert, but I would guess, that weapons which could swing back (like in op's pic) could backfire and hurt the user
I think we need some clarification here. Does OP mean maces or flails?

It can hurt you, yes, but most horsemen were trained to use the weapons given to them, so it was less likely to happen. Footsoldiers though...

Only if they were long enough to make the best use out ouf the height advantage a horse gives you.
I see difficulties using them while riding fast though, maces can break your wrist pretty easily when used wrongly (which is unlikely because cavalry actually got trained properly for the most part) or with to much physical input/resistance.
But sharp weapons can get stuck pretty easily aswell.
If your enemy has decent armor go for blunt weapons, prefer sharp weapons if thats not the case.
