why are christians so scared of the apocrypha?

The King James Apocrypha is canon in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles. It's left out of most contemporary prints of the KJB, but it was included for the first couple of hundred years.

Because deciding what books were canon was ultimately arbitrary and deep down they know it. Unless they're deep in the faith-hole and actually hold zero doubts as to whether or not "guided by the holy spirit" is a statement with any veracity or content.

Because it reminds protestants that the biblical canon is just a selection made by the Roman church among a lot of other books, thus demonstrating that their "sola scriptura" dogma is flawed because the bible itself is made out from tradition.
